Background of District Administration

Chattogram's administrative structure was developed during the Mughal period. The area was divided into several parganas and it was ruled by the Mughals for 94 years. In 1666, Chattogram district was formed. Since then Chittagong Hill Tracts, or the current three Hill districts, were included in the Chattogram district. In 1860, a separate administrative unit was established in the Chittagong Hill Tracts and in 1881, permanent border was drawn between Chattogram and Chittagong Hill Tracts.

The present boundary of Chattogram district is: coastline of the Bay of Bengal on the west, Feni river and India on the north, Chittagong Hill Tracts on the east and Cox's Bazar district on the south.
