Details

Patenga beach is one of the most popular sea beaches in Bangladesh.

Location:

Patenga beach is located just 14 kilometers south of the port city of Chattogram.

Description:

Karnaphuli River originates in the Lusai hills of Mizoram in India, flows through Rangamati and Chattogram and discharges into the Bay of Bengal near Patenga. City dwellers come here to enjoy the scenic beauty of the Bay of Bengal and get rid of monotonous life. The 1991 cyclone caused extensive damage to the beach. Part of the seashore is built-up with concrete walls, and large blocks of stones have been laid to prevent erosion. There is a plan to develop Patenga under the Chattogram City Outer Ring Road Project by creating walkway, sitting arrangement, playground, bathing facilities, modern toilet facilities, car parking and jetties for sea cruise.

Things to do in Patenga Sea Beach

A lot of people visit Patenga beach every afternoon of the week and on holidays. You will have to come out on the beach early in the morning to watch the sunrise. You can increase the level of happiness by getting down in the water at afternoon. But the width of Patenga beach is not very high and it is risky to swim in the sea. There is a chance to float in the sea on speedboats. Sea-bikes and horses are also available for sightseeing on the sea shore. However, you have to pay at a fixed rate per hour for this. Floating ships in the sea or flying aircraft can also be watched. Generally, the tide starts to come in the evening. High tide keeps the concrete walls and large blocks of stones under water. Big waves come to the shore. The sunset view from Patenga beach is just awesome. The beach is safe due to sufficient security arrangements, so tourists can stay there till evening.

Many shops including the restaurants have been built in the shade of Tamarisk tree forest (Jhauban) along the beach. Walking along the north side in the direction of Tamarisk tree forest, you can see the estuary of the Bay of Bengal and Karnaphuli. Patenga is the best place for delicious, mouth-watering street food at very low costs. One of the popular dishes of the food stands is the fried, spicy mud crab served with a small plate full of falafel, garnished with cucumber and onion. A Burmese market has also been set up on the beach. You can finish your shopping there.

Shah Amanat International Airport, BNS Isa Khan (a naval base of the Bangladesh Navy) and several jetties of Chattogram Port are located near Patenga. Bangladesh Naval Academy is also located at Patenga. There is a butterfly park in the Shah Amanat airport road. The park hosts around 1000 butterflies of about 70 different species. If you want to see butterflies, it would be better to go in the morning. They will disappear behind the bushes after the afternoon. It is possible to cover all these spots while visiting the Patenga beach.
